Description

A fine 18th French engraving of a landscape hunting scene with figures, several hooded falcons, horses and dogs, originally painted by Carel de Falens of Antwerp (1683-1733) and engraved by French engraver Jacques Phillipe Le Bas of Paris (1707-1783) in 1745. The engraving is entitled Rendezvous de Chasse - in English, Hunt Meeting. It is inscribed (translated from the French) Picture in the Gallery of the Count of Bruhl, Knight of the Order of the White Eagle, Minister of State and the Cabinet to his Majesty the King of Poland, Elector of Saxony. And below that, also translated, In Paris, by Le Bas, engraver to his Majesty, in the rue de la Harpe 1745.

The complex composition comprises two seated ladies being serenaded by a musician, while the hunt attendants and grooms look on, surrounded by the saddled horses, hounds and hooded falcons, all amid an idyllic wooded and open landscape. Despite the figures being seated or standing, it is a dynamic image, with all enjoying their day out.

I have had the engraving reframed in a later 19th maple frame which I had in stock. The engraving is in excellent condition for its age, with fine clear printing, and just a few tiny foxing marks.

The image dimensions are 57cm high x 48cm wide.
