A South Wales pot board dresser is a traditional regional form of English and Welsh country furniture characterised by an open lower shelf, known as a pot board, positioned near the floor for storing pots and domestic items beneath a row of drawers.

These pieces were traditionally built using solid English or Welsh oak, frequently featuring pegged mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved details, and forged or cast brass hardware such as batwing handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques including hand-sawn timber boards, timber shrinkage cracks, hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, and appropriate surface patination consistent with age and use.

An antique Welsh dresser serves as a grounded anchor piece in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist walls, neutral colour palettes, and curated displays of ceramics or tableware to create textural contrast.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber finish.
