Description

A fine original oil on canvas by William Lakin Turner (b. 1865 – d. 1936)

.

Turner was born to George Turner, a fine artist known as the Derbyshire Constable, and his wife Eliza.

.

William was the eldest of four children. He inherited his father’s artistic talent and studied first under his father along with Louis Bosworth Hurt (1856-1929) and later at the West London College of Arts.

.

He is known for his delicate British landscapes. His work was frequently shown in notable exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Artists and at the Royal Hibernian and his paintings are on display in numerous galleries and museums including the Ruskin Museum.

A 19th-century oil painting is a work of fine art created using pigment suspended in drying oil on a canvas support during the 1800s, often characterised by romanticised realism or pastoral subjects.

Traditional materials include woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over a wooden stretcher frame, oil-based paints made from natural pigments and linseed oil, and hand-carved gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas for age-related craquelure, inspecting the stretcher bars for hand-tool marks and oxidisation, checking the reverse for period inscriptions, and verifying the medium under magnification.

An antique painting adds depth and character to contemporary spaces when hung as a focal point against neutral walls, paired with minimalist lighting to highlight the texture and rich tones of the gilded frame.

Preservation requires hanging paintings away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently dusting the canvas with a soft, dry brush, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the paint surface and the frame.
