This Dutch marquetry secretaire cabinet dates from 1850 in the Dutch Empire style. The piece uses mahogany and walnut with fruitwood inlay and brass, presenting a warm brown colour with polished surfaces and detailed floral marquetry wood inlays across six drawer fronts and side panels. The front includes a top frieze drawer, two faux drawers opening as a secretaire drawer, and three further oak lined drawers below. These drawers have ornate brass escutcheons and handles, flanked by decorative corner columns with brass ormolu mounts, sitting above a simple inlaid base and tapering square feet. The cabinet measures 145 cm high, 1000 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or a study, this cabinet provides practical storage while adding traditional decorative character to an interior space. The contrasting light fruitwood foliate and urn inlays stand out clearly against the darker timber ground across the facade and side panels. The structure rests on four tapering square feet decorated with floral inlay motifs. Buyers can place this upright storage unit against a wall in a reception room, study, or hallway to hold papers, linens, or personal items while serving as a prominent decorative furniture piece.

A Dutch marquetry secretaire cabinet is a tall piece of case furniture originating from the Netherlands, characterised by elaborate wood inlays depicting floral, urn, or scrolling motifs across its facade and sides.

These cabinets are constructed using solid hardwood frames faced with mahogany or walnut veneers, incorporating contrasting fruitwood, boxwood, or stained wood inlays to create decorative patterns.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut floral and urn marquetry motifs, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, historical oak or pine drawer linings, and original brass hardware or escutcheons.

A marquetry cabinet serves as a focal piece when placed against neutral or dark saturated walls, paired with contemporary seating or minimalistic accents to highlight the intricate woodwork.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly along the wood grain.
