FAQs

The sleigh bed style originated in France during the early 19th century, drawing heavy aesthetic inspiration from the classical Empire and neoclassical periods, reminiscent of Roman and Greek curved couches.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or cherry, featuring prominent curved headboards and footboards joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing, aged timber patination, traditional wood fixings, and construction methods characteristic of 19th-century cabinet making rather than modern mass production.

Pair the substantial wooden frame with neutral linen bedding, minimalist bedside tables, and soft lighting to balance the heavy visual weight with contemporary textures.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain and protect the finish.
