This freestanding Chippendale Revival kneehole writing desk dates from 1880 and comes from the London cabinetmakers Druce & Co., Baker Street. It is made from walnut and burr walnut in a warm brown tone, complemented by original brass swan-neck handles and solid oak drawer linings. The exterior displays mirror-matched burr walnut veneers, a three-quarter gallery, crossbanded outset corners, and a foliate-carved kneehole apron. The structure rests on cabriole legs featuring shell-carved knees and ball and claw feet, with polished sides and a polished back. The piece measures 77 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 78 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this desk serves as a functional workspace or study table in a gentleman's library, home office, or living room study. The kneehole design provides comfortable legroom while seated, and the multiple upper and lower drawers offer practical storage for stationery, documents, and writing materials. The finished back allows the desk to stand away from a wall as a central room feature.

Chippendale style desks are distinguished by elegant proportions, carved cabriole legs often terminating in claw-and-ball feet, intricate scrollwork or acanthus leaf motifs, and high-quality cabinet timber such as mahogany or walnut.

These desks typically feature solid walnut or mahogany frames, matched figured or burr veneers on drawer fronts and tops, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass swan-neck or bail handles.

Examine the underside and interior frame for hand-planed timber and dovetail construction, check for authentic makers brass plaques or stamps on drawer rims, and inspect the precision of hand-carved detailing on the knees and apron.

Position the desk against a neutral wall or near a window to highlight the wood grain, pairing it with a tailored leather desk chair and minimal modern desk accessories to maintain an uncluttered aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain annually to nourish the wood and protect the finish from drying out.
