Victorian chests of drawers evolved significantly during the 19th century, transitioning from late Georgian classical proportions to heavier, more ornamented designs influenced by industrial manufacturing and changing domestic requirements.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak for primary visible surfaces, with secondary woods like pine or deal utilised for drawer linings and carcase backs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, timber shrinkage, original backboards, hand-turned wooden knobs, and the natural patina of the wood.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with minimalist walls, contemporary lighting, and abstract art creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the warmth and grain of the antique timber.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
