Walnut was the predominant timber used in British furniture making from the late 17th century until the 1730s, when mahogany began to surpass it in popularity due to the introduction of higher import duties on walnut and the discovery of more stable tropical hardwoods.

These pieces typically feature solid oak or pine secondary framing timbers with figured walnut veneer applied to the exterior surfaces. Construction methods include hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and brass drop handles mounted on backplates.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction markers such as hand-sawn timber boards, irregular dovetail spacing, timber shrinkage cracks beneath veneers, and iron or brass locking mechanisms fitted with hand-filed plates.

A period walnut chest provides rich texture and warmth that anchors a modern neutral scheme, working well when paired with minimalist contemporary lighting or abstract artwork to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor relative humidity between 40% and 50% to prevent veneer lifting, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight, and periodically feeding the timber with traditional beeswax polish while avoiding silicone-based sprays.
