FAQs

Nineteenth-century watercolours often focused on landscape, architectural, and topographical subjects, characterised by transparent washes, loose brushwork, and a strong emphasis on natural light.

Artists of this era typically used finely ground pigments bound in gum arabic applied to handmade or rag paper, often contained within bound sketchbooks.

Authenticity is assessed by examining paper watermarks, the ageing characteristics of the pigments, hand-written inscriptions, and the physical texture of the paper fibres under magnification.

Framing historic works in simple, complementary moulding allows them to serve as sophisticated focal points on a gallery wall or above a console table.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent fading.
