FAQs

British watercolour painting from this period is characterised by delicate washes, transparent pigments, and a strong focus on naturalism, rural life, and topographical accuracy, often capturing the changing light of the countryside.

Artists typically utilised high-rag cotton or handmade watercolour paper, animal-glue sizing, and mineral- or plant-based pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied with fine sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authentication involves examining the paper stock for watermarks, inspecting the pigment composition and oxidisation under magnification, checking for genuine artist signatures or studio stamps, and assessing the framing materials and backboards for age-appropriate wear.

Hang the piece in a slender timber or gilt frame within a simple mount to let the delicate artwork stand out, pairing it with neutral walls and subtle lighting to create a focal point in a study or hallway.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, keep watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity, ensure they are framed behind UV-protective glass, and maintain stable indoor temperatures.
