Antique Afghan Taimani Sistan Baluch 'Seh (Three) Mihrab' prayer rug.

Circa 1900.

This is an outstanding example of a seh-mihrab (three mihrab) prayer rug by the Taimani Baluch, the rug is well drawn and has a superb colour palette, the warm madder red ground and burnt orange make this rug visually very pleasing. The drawing of the design is beautifully executed, with some unusual features. The rug retains the original kilim end finishes with weft work decoration. FAQs

Baluch prayer rugs are handknotted textiles traditionally crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes inhabiting the border regions of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These portable rugs were historically used for daily prayers, featuring distinctive architectural motifs such as the mihrab arch designed to point toward Mecca.

Authentic antique pieces typically feature handspun wool foundations and pile, often dyed using natural organic colourants derived from plants, roots, and insects. The construction involves symmetric or asymmetric hand-knotting on wool warps and wefts, frequently finished with flatwoven ends and braided fringes.

Authentication involves examining the natural abrash colour variations in the wool, the handle and flexibility of the foundation, the type of natural dyes used, and the specific tribal iconography characteristic of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century weaving traditions.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a focal point or a textural wall hanging in a contemporary space, providing warmth and historical contrast against neutral floors or minimalist architectural backdrops.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotating beater bars, professional hand-washing by textile conservators when necessary, and placement away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of natural dyes.
