Ikat is an ancient resist-dyeing technique where warp or weft yarns are bound and dyed prior to weaving on a loom. Historically practiced across Central Asia, Maritime Southeast Asia, and South America, this method creates distinct pattern edges with a feathered appearance.

Traditional ikat purses are primarily crafted using hand-spun silk or cotton yarns dyed with plant-based or natural colourants. Linings often feature woven cotton, while decorative trims incorporate silk tassels, braided edgings, or metallic threads.

Authentic handmade ikat displays subtle variations in thread tension and slight misalignment in the resist-dyed patterns, creating the signature blurred motif edges. Machine-printed imitations typically show uniform, crisp edges on only one side of the fabric.

Small textile items can be displayed flat on a tray, arranged within a decorative bowl, or mounted inside a glass shadow-box frame to protect the fabric while creating a focal point on a shelf or sideboard.
