FAQs

A Davenport desk is a small, compact form of writing desk featuring a sloping top and drawers to one side. Originating in the late 18th century, it was reportedly commissioned by Captain Davenport for use on ships, and later became popular for domestic studies and boudoirs during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

These desks were typically constructed using a solid timber frame with high-grade mahogany veneers, often enhanced with satinwood inlay or marquetry. The writing slopes were traditionally lined with tooled leather, and structural joints utilised traditional dovetailing and mortise-and-tenon techniques.

Authentic pieces from the Edwardian era generally feature period-appropriate hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, authentic period brass hardware, and genuine timber shrinkage rather than modern manufactured board substrates.

A Davenport desk serves as an ideal focal point in a home study or living room when paired with a contemporary upholstered chair to create a balanced contrast. Its compact footprint also allows it to function effectively as a statement piece in a hallway or bedroom.

To preserve the finish, keep the desk away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and leather from drying out and cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the timbers condition.
