FAQs

Victorian animal portraiture gained immense popularity during the 19th century, often commissioned by owners to commemorate prized pets, working dogs, or sporting companions with realistic detail.

Artists during this period typically utilised oil paints applied to stretched canvas, wooden panels, or millboard, housed within elaborate gesso and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the ground layer, pigment ageing, craquelure patterns, artist signatures, and the construction methods of the accompanying period frame.

Such pieces serve as focal points when hung on panelled walls, paired with rich textiles, or placed above a mantelpiece to add historical character and warmth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and consulting a professional conservator for periodic cleaning and stabilisation.
