Description

An early 19th century oil on canvas depicting a barge horse on a tow path.

This finely executed but unsigned painting was almost certainly painted at Flatford Mill in Suffolk where John Constable (1776-1837) painted "The Hay Wain" and other famous works.

It is in very good condition and has had a very light clean but nothing more. The original gilded wooden frame is substantial and good condition.

Provenance: The painting was from the estate of the late Lord Andrew Phillips (1939-2023). Lord Philips lived his whole life here in Suffolk and was well known for his passionate interest in Suffolk history and its people.

He collected paintings from Suffolk artists depicting local scenes.

Oil painting on canvas developed in Flanders and Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, eventually replacing wooden panels as the preferred support for artists due to its durability, flexibility, and ability to hold rich colour textures.

Traditional oil paintings typically utilise ground mineral pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas primed with animal-skin glue and gesso, mounted on wooden stretcher frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, the presence of craquelure in the paint layer, ageing characteristics of the wooden stretcher, artist signatures, and pigment analysis via specialist examination.

An antique oil painting creates a sophisticated focal point when paired with minimalist modern furnishings, allowing the historical depth and traditional brushwork to provide visual contrast against clean architectural lines.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, keeping the canvas away from heat sources, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
