Antique Caucasian Chajli Rug, Unusual Design Variations, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 7ft 0in x 4ft 3in (213 x 129cm).

Antique Caucasian Chajli long rug with triple medallion design.

Circa 1880.

A good example of a Chajli rug, with the traditional three medallion design. This rug has some very unusual design variations; the medallions are normally octagonal, but we can see that the lower ivory medallion is a square. The inner guard border starts at the lower end of the rug but then suddenly stops in line with the top of the square medallion. Also, at the very top end of the rug is a panel in blue; the weaver obviously had a lot of fun weaving this rug.

The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Stock Number: R-2720.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chajli rugs originate from the South Caucasus region, specifically associated with the Shirvan district, and are distinguished by their structured geometric compositions often featuring large octagonal or rectangular central medallions.

Traditional Caucasian rugs were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes including madder for red and indigo for blue.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-bound selvedges, slight intentional asymmetry in the woven motifs known as floaters or abrash colour variations, and a soft, flexible wool warp and weft characteristic of tribal loom weaving.

The strong graphic patterns and rich palette of Caucasian carpets contrast effectively against modern minimalist furniture, dark timber flooring, or neutral upholstery in contemporary and eclectic settings.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to ensure even exposure to foot traffic and sunlight, and consult a specialist rug restorer for professional washing.
