Description

A very large and extremely well made antique Victorian mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880’s.

The quality is outstanding, this is a well designed and very useful item with lots of storage space. The lower drawer is built into the plinth base, so is extra deep. The mahogany has a gorgeous light colour tone and wonderful patina.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is very good for its age. There are various small marks and bumps here and there remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and is characterised by robust construction, practical proportions, and a shift through various revival styles towards heavier, functional pieces.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, utilising hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and turned wooden knobs.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, original brass or wooden locks, and natural patination on the drawer runners and handles.

Pairing a dark wood antique chest with minimalist contemporary decor creates a striking contrast, grounding neutral spaces and adding warmth and historical texture.

Maintain stable humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourish the timber with traditional beeswax to protect the finish.
