The Roman Charity is a well-known classical subject depicting Pero secretly breastfeeding her imprisoned father Cimon as an act of filial piety, which frequently appeared in European painting from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.

Traditional oil paintings were typically executed using ground pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, applied to stretched linen or canvas primed with gesso or lead white.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the weave and ageing of the canvas, the composition and oxidation of the paint layers, stretcher construction, and the presence of craquelure under magnification.

Such artworks can be integrated into contemporary spaces by hanging them unframed or in minimalist frames to create a striking contrast between historical narrative and modern design.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the canvas surface clean with professional conservation methods.
