Description

I love natural indigo-blue ground rugs, particularly where the wool used is exceptional and the blue glows like oil floating on water. This rug has to be seen to fully appreciate the gorgeous shades of blue, covered by a myriad of stylised flowers or shrubs. The main border has a powerful rendition of stylised trees on a natural un-dyed ivory background framing the field.

This rug, which I suspect was made by the Shesh-Boluki sub-tribe within the Qashqa'i confederacy, was made circa 1900 and is in very good overall condition with no repairs.

Size: 2.06m x 1.22m (6' 9" x 4' 0").

An antique Qashqai rug is a hand-knotted textile traditionally woven by the nomadic and settled Qashqai confederacy in the Fars province of south-west Persia, known for distinct geometric motifs and rich wool piles.

These rugs are typically constructed with hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects to achieve enduring colour depth.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical knots, subtle colour variations known as abrash caused by dye lot changes, organic irregularities in the geometric symmetry, and traditional tribal motifs unique to sub-tribes like the Shesh Boluki.

This piece can be used to ground contemporary furniture layouts, adding tactile warmth, historical contrast, and rich colour to minimalist or eclectic living spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in antique textiles, and protection from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent dye fading.
