Pair Framed Portrait Miniatures, Napoleon/ Empress Eugenie, C1880

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Fine pair of late 19th century framed portrait miniatures, c1880. In their original wood frames with brass hanging rings, they appear to be reverse painted on glass , but I am not sure? One depicts Empress Eugenie in a beautiful Victorian gown and the other Napoleon and it is inscribed in gold script Napoleon 1846. On the rear of the Napoleon picture someone has hand written an inscription " Henry ? (surname illegible) to dear Ma 1903". They are both in good original antique condition with minor marks in line with age and use and exactly as you would expect from examples of this age. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.

Price includes FREE UK delivery ,please contact me regarding international shipping.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A portrait miniature is a small, detailed painting, typically executed on vellum, ivory, copper, or card, that originated in the 16th century and gained widespread popularity across Europe as personal mementos before the advent of commercial photography.

Nineteenth-century framed miniatures were commonly painted using watercolour, gouache, or oil paints, encased within cast brass or gilt metal bezels, and mounted onto polished timber backing panels such as oak or mahogany.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-painted brushwork under magnification, natural oxidisation on metal fittings, timber grain variance, and appropriate signs of age on the mounting panels.

These small-scale artworks can be hung as a pair on a narrow wall space, integrated into a gallery wall arrangement, or styled upright on a bookshelf alongside decorative ceramics and books.

Keep portrait miniatures out of direct sunlight and away from humid environments to prevent timber warping or pigment fading, and gently dust the frames with a soft dry brush rather than liquid cleaners.
