Antique Victorian Mahogany Leather Top Knee Hole Desk

19th century
Description

A wonderful antique Victorian mahogany leather top knee hole desk. This was made in England, it dates from around 1860-1880.

It is of superb quality and is a lovely size. This is all one piece with a built in knee hole giving rise to the term ‘knee hole’ desk. The top is inset with a high quality leather writing surface, which is hand coloured and gold tooled around the edges. This sits on plinth bases, it is nicely finished on the rear with a paneled back, so this can be used as a free standing item. There are lots of generous drawers, all running smoothly with fine, hand cut dovetailed joints and beautifully turned mahogany handles.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and impressive grain patterns, there are various very small marks and signs of old wear remaining beneath the polish in places. Overall this has a stunning patina.

One very good feature, is the generous kneehole space, which is hard to find in a desk of these proportions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
