Culvertons has dated this piece to the 1860s.
Remarkably, even though its exterior carries the marks of history, its interior is in excellent condition. The runners and guides show little wear; it's a very useable and charismatic chest. Every handle is stamped with the maker's name and trading address, plus there are the remnants of trading. label pinned to its back. Its turned feet, which are all original, are threaded so they could be removed for transportation, and of course, the chest itself is made in two parts for the same purpose. And for further protection and strength, it retains all its original brass straps and corners. A fine antique military chest.
