FAQs

An antique iron bed is a bed frame constructed primarily from cast or wrought iron, popular from the mid-19th century onwards. A no-end bed specifically features a headboard but lacks a high footboard, creating an open profile at the base.

These beds typically utilise heavy cast iron components, tubular iron frames, and brass fittings or mounts. Joints were often secured with wedge-lock or bolt-in fastenings designed for structural rigidity.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-poured iron castings, natural oxidisation patterns, and minor imperfections consistent with historical manufacturing techniques, unlike uniform modern reproductions.

Pairing the industrial quality of the metal frame with neutral linen bedding, layered wool throws, and contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme that bridges historical character and modern comfort.

Maintenance involves dusting with a dry cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the finish, and periodically checking and tightening structural bolts to ensure stability.
