How modern she looks - It is hard to believe that drawing was done in the 1880s.
The renowned portraitist Fred Roe (1864 –1947/8) had studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art under Seymour Lucas. Roe first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1877, was elected to the RBA in 1895, then to the Royal Institute of British Painters in 1909.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition from 1887, and continued to show there until a few years before his death. He also showed at other principle London and provincial centres, as well as at the Paris Salon; the Rome International Salon and in Toronto.
Roe's work can be found in many public collections including the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Our drawing in sanguine/red chalk has wonderful provenance. it belonged to the British industrialist Leonard Pelham Lee (1903–1980), a relative of Roe's, and hung in Lee's manor house in Warwickshire.
Measuring 39.5 x 29.5 cm at sight, the work is is signed and dated (18)88 at the lower left. The overall framed is 52 x 37.5 cm.
