Copeland Aesthetic Movement Octagonal Plate

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

An exceptionally fine Copeland octagonal plate in jewelled cobalt blue with central design representing a quail or partridge. The decoration is superb with wonderful raised gilding over the cobalt blue glaze. The central panel most probably replicates Japanese lacquer with enamel on a powder gilt ground. The plate is marked with the Copeland mark and pattern number for C.1880. The piece was most likely decorated by the celebrated Copeland artist Charles Brayford known for his talent with gilding and birds (active 1878 - 1887) as similar examples with his signature are known. The plate is in excellent condition and a superb example of late nineteenth century porcelain.
