Description

Here is a highly atmospheric 19th century oil on canvas depicting the last rays of the days light, as a cottager unloads his boat and wearily heads home.

Painted in wonderfully muted tones, the setting sun draws the viewers eye in, towards the cottage s on the riverbank, their windows aglow giving a hint of the cosy fireside welcome within. Smoke spirals up into the wintry sky as the Riverman heads indoors and the waterfowl settle into the reeds for the night.

Painted by Henry Maurice Page (1845 - 1908) , and signed to the bottom left corner , the painting is very typical of his subject matter of capturing the magical time - often known as the gloaming- between day and dusk.

Page was born in 1845, and was a prolific artist in oils favouring river scenes and landscapes. He exhibited at The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

The picture is in good order, but as with many oils of this age has crazing in places - although as I hope the photographs show, this doesn't distract and the painting still displays beautifully.

The painting is presented in its original gilt frame, and measures 62cm by 45cm frames, and 40cm by 24cm for the canvas.
