FAQs

A netsuke is a small carved toggle traditionally used in Edo and Meiji period Japan to secure small containers called sagemono, such as inro or tobacco pouches, to the traditional kimono sash or obi.

While boxwood and other dense hardwoods are common, traditional netsuke were also carved from ivory, stag antler, bone, ceramic, and occasionally metal or lacquer.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, wear consistent with age, meticulous hand-carving detail, and often feature carved or inlaid artist signatures known as mei on the base.
