Yomut Ensi, Central Asia, Circa 1880, 1.70m X 1.48m

19th century
Description

The term 'ensi' refers to a type of weaving that was made to hang over the doorway of the yurt or tent. The Yomut tribe were one of the larger Turkoman tribal groupings who produced many types of weavings for domestic use. Their ensis are filled by cosmic significance, including the desire to protect those who live within the yurt, and are often very beautiful. This example is definitely of that group. Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, it is woven with fine velvety wool using the symmetric knot, and wonderful natural dyes. The design has a classic format of four panels created by a central cruciform. An interesting featuring are the curled leaves which run along the long borders and through the centre. It has a lovely 'elem' or skirt at the bottom end, and lots of other great details. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in excellent original condition. Professionally cleaned. end, This ensi is a wonderful example of Turkoman weaving.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
