Kashgai carpets are hand-knotted by the Kashgai confederacy of nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralist tribes originating from the Fars province in south-west Persia. Their textile tradition dates back centuries, defined by distinctive tribal iconography passed down through generations.

These textiles traditionally feature hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, including the warps and wefts. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects are typical of older pieces, combined with asymmetrical or symmetrical knots on a wool foundation.

Authenticity is indicated by irregularities in weave density, hand-spun wool texture with natural abrash, and traditional botanical or insect-derived dyes that mellow uniformly over time. Examining the fringe and selvedges reveals hand-finished tribal construction methods absent in machine-made replicas.

Such textural floor coverings anchor contemporary living spaces by introducing rich colour and historical depth beneath modern minimalist furniture. They complement neutral hardwood floors and serve as a focal point in rooms featuring leather, brass, and architectural details.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing by specialists familiar with antique textiles, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to prevent dye degradation.
