FAQs

A Georgian oak dresser base is a functional wooden storage unit produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, typically featuring a combination of drawers and cupboards used in domestic dining rooms or kitchens for storing tableware and provisions.

These pieces were constructed predominantly from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails for drawers, mortise and tenon frames for doors, and pegged construction, often finished with brass or wooden hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetails with irregular spacing, natural timber shrinkage, oxidised brass fittings or keyhole escutcheons, and historic patination accumulated over centuries of use.

A Georgian dresser base can be grounded within contemporary schemes by pairing it against neutral plastered walls to highlight the rich timber grain, using the surface to display ceramics or modern abstract art for a balanced contrast.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically feeding the timber with traditional beeswax to maintain the finish.
