Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

18th-century Italian devotional carvings are noted for detailed drapery, expressive features, and rich polychrome decoration. Often created for chapels or private worship, these items feature gesso-coated carved wood decorated with tempera pigments and leaf gilding.

Sculptors typically used softwoods such as lindenwood, pine, or poplar, which were carved before being coated in a layer of gesso. The surfaces were then painted with tempera or oil pigments and highlighted with genuine gold leaf using water gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces generally display natural wood shrinkage, age-related cracking (craquelure) in the gesso or paint layer, and surface wear in exposed areas. Construction signs like hand-tool marks, historical insect flight holes, and authentic patination on gilded areas also indicate age.

Placing a historical carving on a modern console table or inside a minimalist alcove creates a focused visual accent. The contrast between patinated historic surfaces and modern architectural lines highlights the sculptural form.

Keep the sculpture in a climate-controlled environment with stable humidity to prevent timber movement and paint flaking. Dust gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or waxes that could dissolve original pigments.
