Antique Caucasian Kuba Region Runner, Outstanding Full Pile Condition, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 14ft 2in x 4ft 3in (433 x 129cm).

Antique Caucasian Kuba region 'Konagkend' runner, with all over repeat design.

Circa 1900.

The dark indigo field is filled with finely drawn repeat design, typical of those found in the Kuba region attributed to Konagkend. The border is one of the more uncommon designs found on rugs from this region but it frames the runner really well. There is a small panel in the top left hand corner containing an inscription and the date '1332'.

The runner is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and full pile of fine soft wool. The kilim retains a short section of original kilim at both ends.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

The runner is suitable for normal domestic use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian Kuba rugs originate from the northeastern Caucasus region and are characterized by their fine hand-knotted wool construction, dense geometric patterning, and saturated natural dye palettes incorporating dark blue, madder red, and ivory tones.

These runners were hand-knotted by village weavers using hand-spun wool pile on wool or cotton foundation threads, with dyes derived from local plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit a firm, compact weave with a low pile, intricate geometric motifs across the main field, multiple decorative border bands, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

Positioning a tribal runner in an entry corridor or along hardwood flooring provides structural geometry, rich visual weight, and contrast against minimalist architecture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beat bar, rotate the rug periodically to distribute foot traffic evenly, and treat spills immediately with cold water and a clean cloth.
