A Pair of Framed 19th Century Butterfly Prints

19th century
Description

A pair of 19th Century beautifully illustrated chromolithographs of butterflies, moths and caterpillars. Depicting life stages of various moths and butterflies, including caterpillars feeding on their native food sources, by W.F Kirby, circa 1885.

These are presented in our handmade copies of an original Regency frame, of rectangular form, with a central oval border and verre eglomise glazing. These frames are made in our workshop, using the traditional methods of wood, plaster, gesso, bole and gilding with 23 carat gold leaf. They are subtly aged and finished with a period or hand cast brass picture ring for hanging.

The chromolithographs were from ''European Butterflies & Moths'' By W.F Kirby, assistant in the zoological department, British Museum & secretary to the Entomological society of London.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, natural history study expanded rapidly across Europe, prompting high demand for illustrated scientific publications. Detailed hand-coloured engravings and lithographs of insects and flora were produced both for academic study and upper-class domestic decoration.

The prints were produced on rag paper using copperplate engraving or lithographic printing, followed by hand-applied watercolour pigments. Frames from this era frequently feature wood, hand-applied gold leaf gesso gilding, glass, and fabric mounts such as velvet or silk.

Authentic period prints display plate mark impressions from copper plates or slight variations in hand-applied colour washes. The paper typically shows natural age-related toning, plate lines, or minor foxing under microscopic or visual inspection, distinct from modern digital dot patterns.

Pairs of prints can be hung vertically or horizontally to frame architectural features, such as fireplaces, doorways, or narrow wall niches. Combining framed scientific artwork with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast between historic detail and clean lines.

Display prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper degradation. Clean giltwood frames using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding water or chemical solvents that could strip delicate leaf gilding.
