Antique Caucasian Three Medallion Soumak with Scarce Yellow Ground Border, Circa 1870 or Earlier.

19th century
Description

Size: 312 x 220cm (10ft 3in x 7ft 3in).

Antique Caucasian soumak carpet of three medallion design with scarce yellow border.

Circa 1870 or earlier.

This soumak is of the classic three medallion format, with two blue medallions and a soft green medallion in the centre. Each medallion contains an octogen with a classic detailed design within. The soft abrashed red field is covered with tribal design elements such as 'everlasting knots', 'floral rosettes' and flower heads. Instead of the usual small octogens in the field along side the medallions this example has a box design filled with the 'S' device. The soumak has superb colour and includes a soft green and yellow that is found in the earliest examples, in particular the outstanding border. Note the original braided finishes at both ends, these show some wear and a few losses.

The soumak is in good condition with even wear and a few scattered spots of heavier wear, there is slight damage to the lower left hand corner. (we would be happy to quote for full restoration).

The soumak is suitable for light domestic use.

The soumak has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

This is a truly outstanding soumak that would grace any room.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian Soumak rugs originated in the Caucasus region during the nineteenth century and earlier, crafted by nomadic and village weavers. They are distinguished by their flatweave technique, geometric patterns, and symbolic tribal motifs.

Soumak carpets are constructed using a flatweave brocading technique where supplementary wool yarn wraps over warp threads, leaving loose ends on the reverse side. Natural vegetable dyes are traditionally used to colour the hand-spun wool yarns.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-spun wool, natural dye variation known as abrash, and structural irregularities inherent to handloom weaving. The presence of specific geometric medallion structures and supplementary warp wrapping on the reverse side confirms the Soumak technique.

A Caucasian Soumak rug adds texture, warm tones, and historic character when placed on neutral timber or stone flooring. Its geometric layout complements both traditional period rooms and minimalist modern spaces as a focal point.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush bar to prevent snagging the flatweave threads. Use a high-quality rug underlay to prevent slipping and wear, and consult a specialist restorer for deep cleaning.
