Antique Ersari Turkmen Torba with 'Shemle' Gul Design, Great Condition, Circa 1890.

Size: 4ft 2in x 1ft 4in (127 x 40cm)

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba with 'shemle gul design.

Circa 1890.

Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

This example has a repeat shemle gul design that is also found on weavings by the Saryk Turkmen. The colour is outstanding with rich warm reds combined with dark and light indigo blue.

The torba is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

Hand washed and ready for display.
