How do I clean a white marble column?

Use a soft, damp cloth with warm water to remove dust and surface dirt. Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar, or abrasive pads, which etch and dull the polished stone surface. Dry the marble thoroughly with a clean microfiber cloth to prevent water spots and maintain the natural lustre of the material.

Can these columns support heavy objects?

Solid stone pedestals and columns possess substantial weight-bearing capacity suited for urns, sculptures, and heavy table lamps. Ensure the item centres its weight evenly across the top plinth to maintain stability. Check that the base rests level upon the floor, as uneven surfaces put undue stress on stone joints and mounting pins.

What is the difference between marble and alabaster?

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallised carbonate minerals, offering high hardness and opacity. Alabaster is a softer mineral composed of gypsum, which transmits light more readily. Alabaster pieces, often found in early twentieth-century lamps and stands, feel cooler and scratch more easily than harder white marbles.

Where should I place a column in a room?

Columns work effectively in hallways, corners, or as focal points displaying sculpture and decorative objects. Positioning them away from heavy foot traffic protects projecting corners and delicate brass mounts. Ensure adequate clearance around the base so the architectural proportions of the piece remain visible from multiple angles.
