How do I date an antique white chest of drawers?

Dating relies on examining construction techniques, timber types, and hardware fixings. Hand-cut dovetails and original painted surfaces often point towards eighteenth or nineteenth-century origins. Secondary indicators include drawer linings, backboards, and the specific decorative style, such as Gustavian or Georgian proportions, which shifted across the decades.

Are painted finishes usually original?

Many pine pieces carry later decorative coats applied over decades of use. Surviving early or first-period paint shows specific craquelure, wear patterns, and underlying preparation layers. When a listing specifies original paint, it indicates that the decorative scheme dates from the period of manufacture rather than a recent workshop refresh.

Where should I place a marble top commode?

Marble top commodes suit bedrooms, hallways, and living spaces as statement storage pieces. The stone surface provides a durable top for lamps, mirrors, and decorative objects. Consider the weight of the stone when positioning the piece, particularly if transporting it up stairs or placing it on uneven historic flooring.

What is the difference between a commode and a chest of drawers?

The term commode typically describes low, decorative continental European cabinets with drawers or doors, often featuring shaped fronts. A chest of drawers is a broader term encompassing British vernacular and formal utility furniture. In practice, continental pieces built as commodes frequently function as standard bedroom or hallway storage today.
