How do I clean a hand knotted wool rug?

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating power brush removes loose grit from the wool pile. Professional specialist cleaning remains essential for deep washing to protect natural dyes and foundation fibres. Avoid household chemical treatments or excessive moisture, which can weaken vintage cotton foundations and alter traditional colourfastness. Prompt blotting of spills prevents staining without disturbing the hand-spun fibres.

Can I place a vintage rug in a hallway?

Narrow runner formats suit hallways, landings, and corridors where traditional floor coverings provide warmth and foot traffic protection. Selecting appropriate underlay prevents slipping and cushions the wool pile against hard floors. High-traffic corridors benefit from durable wool and cotton structures that withstand regular movement while preserving the historic character of the textile.

What defines a prayer rug?

Prayer rugs feature a distinctive mihrab design, an architectural arch motif that worshippers pointed toward Mecca during daily prayers. These portable textiles often display compact dimensions suited for individual use. Anatolian and Caucasian weaving traditions frequently incorporated these niche designs into village and regional workshop production.
