What is a French commode?

A French commode is a low chest of drawers that traditionally served as a principal storage item in domestic interiors. These pieces often feature decorative marble tops and ornate brass handles. Over different centuries, makers adapted the form from structured walnut designs to sweeping serpentine and bombe shapes.

How do I style a bedside cabinet?

Bedside cabinets provide compact storage while introducing period character through inlaid woods or painted finishes. Matching pairs help create symmetry beside a bed. Their marble tops offer durable surfaces for lamps and small personal items.

How do I identify Louis XV style?

Louis XV style pieces display asymmetrical curves, cabriole legs, and floral or scroll carvings. The overall aesthetic prioritises organic movement and flowing lines. Chests from this design vocabulary frequently incorporate bombe silhouettes and delicate marquetry.

What timber was used most often?

Walnut, oak, and mahogany appear frequently across 18th and 19th-century pieces. Cabinetmakers also utilised exotic veneers like kingwood and palisander for decorative marquetry work. Painted wood and pine surface treatments represent alternative finishes from regional workshops.
