What is an astragal cabinet?

An astragal cabinet is a piece of furniture featuring glass doors divided into smaller panes by narrow wooden glazing bars called astragals. These items typically take the form of bookcases, display cabinets, or corner cupboards. Cabinet makers utilised this technique to strengthen large glass areas while adding decorative geometric patterns to the front of the furniture.

How do I date a mahogany bookcase?

Dating a mahogany bookcase involves examining the timber selection, construction methods, hardware, and stylistic revival influences present in the piece. Georgian and Regency examples display different proportions and foot styles compared to Edwardian or later revival items. Interior construction details, such as drawer dovetails and backboards, also provide clear indicators of the era in which the cabinet was built.

Where should I place a corner cabinet?

Corner cabinets are designed to fit neatly into the ninety-degree angle of a room, making efficient use of otherwise dead floor space. They work well in dining rooms, studies, or living areas for displaying decorative ceramics or storing books. Tall floor-standing versions anchor a corner visually, while smaller wall-hanging or two-part cupboards offer versatile arrangement options.

What is a secretaire bookcase?

A secretaire bookcase combines upper shelving enclosed by glazed doors with a middle drawer that folds down to serve as a writing desk. Inside this drop-front drawer, makers arranged small stationery drawers and pigeonholes. This form provided a practical writing station without requiring a separate desk elsewhere in the room.
