What is an ormolu mounted console table?

An ormolu mounted console table is a decorative furniture piece featuring cast gilt bronze ornaments affixed to a wooden frame, often topped with marble. These tables were originally designed to stand flat against a drawing room wall, serving both an ornamental and practical function.

How do I distinguish between Louis styles?

Louis XV style pieces are characterised by asymmetrical curves, exuberant cabriole legs, and naturalistic floral motifs. They embrace fluid shapes and elaborate ormolu scrollwork. Louis XVI style shifts toward strict symmetry, straight fluted legs, and classical geometric motifs derived from ancient architectural precedents.

Where should I place a console table?

Console tables sit naturally in entrance halls, long corridors, or against prominent walls in a living room. Their shallow depth allows them to occupy circulation spaces without blocking movement. Pairing the table with a matching wall mirror or placing decorative porcelain on the marble surface completes the traditional arrangement.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

These tables are solid structural objects built from dense hardwoods like mahogany and walnut. However, delicate veneer surfaces and fire-gilt mounts require gentle treatment. Tables configured as card or games tables feature hinged tops that open for occasional leisure activities rather than heavy industrial tasks.
