What periods do these paintings come from?

The available selection spans from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. These eras encompass Georgian, Victorian, and early modern aesthetic movements. Each period brought distinct approaches to both canvas painting and the moulding of decorative metallic frames.

How were these frames constructed?

Makers carved wooden foundations or built up deep mouldings using timber and gesso. They then applied gold leaf by hand to create a brilliant, reflective metallic surface. This construction method protected the edges of the canvas while adding visual weight to the artwork.

Where should I hang an oil painting in a gilt frame?

These pieces suit principal reception rooms, hallways or studies where natural light can strike the metallic surface of the frame. Placing them away from direct heat sources protects both the oil pigments and the underlying wood. Their reflective surrounds help brighten darker corners by bouncing ambient light back into the space.

How do I identify the school or period?

Clues lie in the clothing styles of portrait subjects, the architectural details of landscapes, and the specific moulding profiles of the frame. Signatures, artist plaques, and exhibition labels on the reverse also provide direct historical evidence. Comparing the preparation of the canvas and the composition of the gesso helps confirm the manufacturing era.
