How do I date a mahogany mirror?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, screw types, wood species and secondary timbers used in the backboards and framing. Stylistic cues such as proportions, feet types and edge mouldings also point towards specific decades. Early Georgian examples differ noticeably in weight and joinery from later Victorian or Edwardian productions, reflecting shifts in workshop practices and prevailing design preferences.

Where should I place a vanity mirror?

These mirrors suit placement atop a dressing chest, sideboard or heavy table where the depth of the base can sit securely. They function well in bedrooms or dressing areas needing portable tabletop reflection. Ensure the surface supports the footprint of the mirror base evenly, avoiding damp locations that might affect the silvering behind the glass or warp the timber frame.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many surviving pieces retain older glass, which often exhibits light foxing, minor speckling or slight waviness across the reflection. Replacement glass appears frequently due to the fragile nature of historic mirrors. Examining the silvering behind the plate and the way the glass is secured into the rebate helps determine whether the plate dates to the original period of manufacture.

How should I clean the mahogany frame?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth to remove surface particles without disturbing the aged patina of the polished wood. Avoid modern chemical sprays or silicone polishes that build up residue over time. Occasional application of a suitable wax preserves the moisture in the timber and maintains the subtle sheen characteristic of period polish.
