How were grand tour engravings originally used?

Travellers returning from continental Europe bound these prints into large volumes or framed them for display in country houses. They served as scholarly records of classical antiquity and reminders of educational travels. Over time, collectors dispersed the bound volumes to frame individual plates as wall art. They remain popular for adding architectural discipline and historical depth to domestic interiors.

How do I care for framed paper prints?

Keep framed paper prints away from direct sunlight to prevent the ink and any applied watercolour from fading. Acid-free mounting protects the fragile paper over decades of display. Maintain stable room temperatures and low humidity to avoid paper warping or foxing. Dust the glass gently with a dry cloth rather than spraying cleaners near the wooden frames.

How do I distinguish eighteenth century prints?

Examine the paper closely for chain lines and watermarks characteristic of handmade laid paper from the period. The plate mark, where the metal plate pressed into the damp paper, should be clearly visible around the image. Typography, spelling of classical titles, and ink saturation also help separate genuine period impressions from later photographic reproductions.

Why do some prints feature hand watercolour?

Publishers and owners occasionally tinted architectural prints to highlight sculptural details or architectural orders. This practice made academic subjects more visually engaging for domestic display. Watercolour additions range from delicate washes on classical statues to full colouring across entire architectural elevations.
