Description

Large engraving by James Basire of the Antiquities of Athens.

The Choregic monument of Lysicrates is one of the earliest in Greece to use the Corinthian architectural order. The frieze running around the top of the monument show Dionysos and his satyrs attacking some pirates who had kidnapped him. The defeated pirates jumped overboard and turned into dolphins.

This eighteenth-century print is an unframed monochrome copperplate engraving on paper, executed in a Neoclassical style. The central motif depicts a hybrid mythical creature with a human male torso, human legs, and a creature head with fins, reclining horizontally above stylised waves and a dark rock formation against a densely cross-hatched background. The plate margin is visible as a distinct impressed border around the image, containing small handwritten script and numeric catalogue notations near the right-hand corner. The paper shows natural toning and slight age discoloration along its outer edges. The visual composition includes dark grey ink shading across the horizontal plane and sharp linear definition along the musculature of the torso and the foaming crests of the water below. The entire paper sheet measures 37 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. This piece suits placement on a narrow wall space within a gentleman's library or study interior, mounted and framed behind glass to preserve the paper and ink.
