How do I hang a heavy antique mirror?

Ensure your wall fixings anchor directly into solid masonry or structural studs rather than relying solely on plaster. Professional mirror hangers utilise heavy-duty D-rings and steel wire rated well above the weight of the timber and glass. Check that the original backing boards and frame joints remain secure before mounting. Distribute the weight evenly across two separate fixing points to keep the frame stable.

What is parcel gilding?

Parcel gilding is a decorative technique where gold leaf is applied selectively to carved highlights, mouldings, or crestings. This leaves the surrounding mahogany grain visible to create a balanced two-tone visual effect. Artisans applied a layer of gesso beneath the gold leaf to achieve a sharp, smooth surface. This method accentuates the intricate woodwork on Georgian and revival frames.

Are these mirrors in original condition?

Many pieces retain their original glass plates, surface patination, and gilded accents acquired over centuries of domestic use. Natural ageing often appears as subtle foxing or light oxidation within the mirror glass. Some examples have undergone careful conservation or partial regilding to stabilise the gesso and wood. Checking the backboards and framing structure helps confirm the historical integrity of the piece.
