Are the mirror plates original?

Many surviving examples retain their early or original mirror glass, which often exhibits characteristic foxing, light oxidation, and subtle distortions. These traits confirm the age of the piece and add to its visual character. Replacements occur frequently because fragile old glass was easily broken or degraded over centuries. Examining the reflection and the backing boards helps determine whether the glass dates to the period of the frame.

How should I clean the frame?

Maintenance requires dry dusting with a soft, clean brush to remove accumulated particles from the intricate fretwork and carved details. Moisture and modern chemical polishes can damage fragile gold leaf and soften old wood finishes. Glass panels can be cleaned sparingly using a cloth slightly dampened with water or mild glass cleaner, taking care not to let liquid seep behind the rebate into the backing timber.

What is the difference between George III and Edwardian versions?

George III pieces date from the 18th century, showcasing hand-cut mahogany fretwork, period gilding techniques, and often genuine antique mirror plates. The timber patination reflects centuries of exposure and care. Edwardian reproductions and interpretations from around 1900 adopt similar Chippendale motifs but typically utilise machine assistance for finer fret cuts and brighter, more uniform surface finishes.
