How do I hang a heavy antique mirror?

These heavy frames require secure wall fixings distributed evenly across the structure to support the combined weight of the timber and glass. Professional installation into masonry or secure wall studs ensures safety. Position the glass at eye level to maximise light reflection and balance the proportions of the surrounding furniture.

What periods do these mirrors come from?

The available pieces originate from various historical eras, including the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods, alongside eighteenth and nineteenth-century continental workshops. Each era brings distinct stylistic traits, from ornate Rococo curves to restrained neoclassical lines. Identifying stylistic markers helps connect a mirror to its probable decade of creation.

How should I clean a gilded frame?

Dust the carved wooden surfaces gently using a soft, dry brush to protect the delicate gold leaf layers. Avoid liquid cleaners and harsh chemicals that can strip the historic finish. Maintain the glass using a simple cloth dampened slightly with water while avoiding contact with the surrounding gilt edges.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many older pieces retain their original antique glass, which often displays charming imperfections, foxing, and wavy distortions. Replacements do occur over centuries of use to restore clarity or repair damage. Examining the silvering behind the glass provides clues regarding the age and history of the plate.
