How do I hang a heavy giltwood mirror?

These heavy frames require secure fixings anchored directly into structural wall studs or masonry rather than plaster alone. Using a substantial picture wire or metal brackets distributed across the frame ensures the weight is evenly supported. Take care to measure the height so the glass reflects the room at eye level when viewed from a standing position. Professional installation is often advisable for larger overmantel examples.

Foxing refers to the small dark spots and mottled patches that develop on older mercury glass mirrors over time. This chemical ageing process occurs as air reacts behind the reflective backing. Many collectors value foxing as an indicator of genuine age and authenticity. It creates a softer, less clinical reflection than modern float glass.

How should I clean a gilded frame?

Dust the carved surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing delicate gesso or gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners and chemical sprays, which can strip historic finishes from the wood. Glass panels can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep behind the frame edges. Regular light maintenance preserves the fragile metallic surfaces.

Are these mirrors period or revival?

The inventory includes authentic eighteenth-century items alongside nineteenth and early twentieth-century revival pieces made in earlier styles. Cabinet makers in the Victorian and Edwardian eras frequently recreated Georgian designs using traditional materials. Examining the construction methods, backboards, and wear patterns helps distinguish original eighteenth-century work from later interpretations. Both categories offer distinct craftsmanship and historical interest.
