How do I identify a Georgian wine glass?

Georgian wine glasses are identified by their heavy lead metal content, folded or beaded feet, and characteristic stem formations like air twists or opaque twists. Bowl shapes typically follow trumpet, ogee, or bell profiles. These pieces reflect the social drinking habits of the seventeen-hundreds and often show pontil marks on the underside of the base.

What is lead crystal in 18th-century pieces?

Lead crystal refers to glass formulated with lead oxide, which was pioneered in England to increase weight, brilliance, and working time. This heavier metal allowed for deeper cutting and clearer optical refractions. In eighteenth-century production, this material gave vessels a distinctive resonance and a lustrous surface that survives today.

Were these glasses used daily?

Many of these vessels served formal dining tables, toasts, and tavern gatherings rather than casual daily use. Export wine glasses and toasting glasses played specific roles in social ceremonies and dining rituals. Their survival through the centuries points to careful handling by past owners who valued the heavy lead metal.

What distinguishes an opaque twist from an air twist?

An opaque twist incorporates solid white or coloured enamel glass threads within the stem, whereas an air twist relies solely on trapped air channels. Opaque twists create a dense, highly visible white lace effect inside the clear metal. Both styles emerged during the mid-Georgian period as makers experimented with internal stem decoration.
